Scholarship Fund Charter

Jane LeGro Smith (Chair), Patricia Quenan Hubbell and Bill Schrouder, after seeking input from the class, were successful in receiving approval from the Board of Education of the Penn Yan Central School District to create the Class of 1959 Scholarship.  The committee purposed to try and reach students who are generally overlooked when scholarship determinations are made: ie, the average to average-plus student who has elected to begin his or her post secondary education at a two-year institution.  Therefore, the selection criteria of the Class of 1959 Scholarship initiative are that the student be average to average-plus scholastically, demonstrate a financial need, and, in the opinion of the school administration, be determined very likely to be successful.

The personnel of the school district will select that candidate from the graduating senior class using the above criteria.  Janie LeGro Smith and Pat Quenan Hubbell have kindly attended the PYA Awards Exercises on Monday, June 7th, in order to present the scholarship award to this year's selected senior.  (See the responses from the two winners below.)

The Scholarship Fund currently has a balance of approximately $3,000, which is planned to be two awards each year over the next three years.  At the same time, numerous classmates are very interested in continuing the scholarship initiative.  It is our intention, therefore, to

a) solicit our class members each year in order to add growth to the fund, and to try to continue scholarships in the memory of the Class of '59 for as long as possible.

b) utilize proceeds from fund raising initiative towards scholarship giving.

c) to ask classmate to give thought to the possibility of adding the Fund to their estate planning.

At this time, if there are any classmates who are interested in making a tax-deductible donation to the Fund, checks may be make payable to" The Penn Yan Central School District, wih a memo that the donation is for the Calss of 1959 Scholarship Fund.  Checks may be mailed to Jane LeGro Smith, 228 Marlette Dr, Farmington, NY 14425.  Janie will acknowledge them and forward them tot he school district, where they will be placed in an interest bearing account for us.

We are extremely grateful to those of you who have supported the fund so far, and we are interested in your comments or or suggestions as we move forward.
